21th Century - 2008

2008

Due to water ingress, remedial work was carried out to the South Transept, this where the Transept is attached to the cottage. The work was carried out with the consent of CADW and stood under the supervision of Mr Neil Daniels (Senior Architect of CADW).

We enquired about the possibility of handing over the ownership of the Pill Priory's Scheduled Ancient Monument ruins to CADW.

They replied that they have a formal policy for taking Scheduled Ancient Monuments into the care of the Welsh Assembly Government and their assessment of the site had been made against the procedures for evaluating proposals for Guardianship, they declined our offer of ownership and provided us with the following reasons for doing so:

  • Difficulty in managing the monument because part of it is attached to our private dwelling, whose grounds are part of the 'buried' Priory complex;
  • The complications of enabling public access at all reasonable times in line with CADW's statutory duty;
  • There is no public car parking provision within the hamlet of Lower Priory;
  • Increased visitor traffic could have detrimental effect upon the hamlet itself and would also have the potential to adversely affect our privacy and security.

We accept CADW's decision and we remain committed to them.
